The History of Mexican Independence Day

The Mexican War of Independence was an armed conflict that resulted in Mexico’s independence from Spain. The war lasted for nearly 11 years and included many local and regional battles that occurred within the same period. Considered a revolutionary civil war, the war started on September 16th, 1810, when Father Hidalgo rang his church’s bell in the town of Dolores and delivered a speech that is known as the Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores). The speech demanded the end of Spanish rule and inspired Mexicans to call for arms to fight for their Independence. The brutal Mexican War of Independence lasted over a decade until August 24th, 1821, when Spain withdrew and officially recognized Mexico as an independent country.  Today, Father Hidalgo is often referred to as the Father of Mexican Independence, and Mexican Independence Day has been celebrated every year in towns throughout the country since that momentous day on September 16th, 1810.
