The Carnival Background

Many cities and towns throughout Mexico celebrate Carnival during the spring. Carnival is known as “Carnaval” in Spanish. The Carnival is held the week before “Miercoles de Cenizas”, which in Spanish means Ash Wednesday. The Carnival signals the start of Lent and being sober before Easter. Carnival celebrations can vary each year, but tt is easy to remember that Carnival is always before Ash Wednesday. This year’s Carnival will start on February 27th and end on March 5th. On Tuesday, March 5th is when the biggest party will happen. Called Mardi Gras in French, in English it is known as “Fat Tuesday” and as “Martes de Carnaval” in Spanish.
