The Malecon – Puerto Vallarta’s Boardwalk

One of the most beloved features of Puerto Vallarta is the famed Malecon. Puerto Vallarta’s Malecon is a beautiful boardwalk and seawall that runs for over a mile long protecting all the shops, boutiques, bars, restaurants, palm trees and amphitheater from the Pacific tides on Banderas Bay.

Renovations

In 2011, the Malecon boardwalk was renovated in Puerto Vallarta, so visitors will have an improved experience. There are shrub beds filled with tropical plants and palm trees as well as bugambilia plants lining the street. Beneath your feet you will see the art of the local indigenous community, the Huichol, etched into the flooring and decorated with pebbles.

Sculptures and art

As you stroll along the Malecon boardwalk you will see sculptures that were crafted by Mexican artists who have a special tie with Puerto Vallarta. There is a free guided tour you can take too, that introduces visitors to each of the sculptures. You can ask at Galeria Pacifico for information about this free tour in English. While you continue to stroll down the Malecon boardwalk to the Old Town area you will see a new pier that lights up at night. From here you can take water taxis to beaches further south along the coast or set off on tours and excursions.
