The Mexican colonial city San Miguel del Allende is known for its vibrant, colorful buildings and is located in the middle of Mexico. Formerly a hidden gem of Mexico, it is becoming more well known since in 2017 Travel and Leisure Magazine named this city the “Best City in the World” due to its Spanish architecture and the charm that small towns are known for. San Miguel de Allende has perfect weather as the temperatures range between 70’s to the 80’s, and this is year-round. This enchanted city has more than 150,000 residents. Although San Miguel de Allende has that small town feel and charm, it still provides many modern day conveniences that everyone can appreciate. The city has a historic area where cobblestone lines the walkways to the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel non-Gothic church. The church has very high towers that are pink and hover over the main plaza in the city. The buildings throughout the town are painted in vibrant colors of orange, pink, and red shades, which gives this town that authentic Mexican charm and appeal found in other cities such as Guanajuato. The city is known for having a flourishing art scene and many art festivals are held in the city year-round. One of the most popular festivals in San Miguel de Allende is the Day of the Dead or also known in Mexico as Dia de los Muertos. The Day of the Dead is held each year during the first week of November.
San Miguel de Allende is not only known for its arts, but also for its fine culinary offerings. Visitors can enjoy homemade, freshly baked treats all the way up to world class, fine dining. Visitors will see street vendors selling churros near the main square of the city that you should definitely try. A churro is a delicious sugary treat that is very similar to a donut. The Cumpanio Bakery is an European inspired bakery that makes the best pastries in the city. They have been in business since 2011. La Parada is one of the most popular restaurants in the city so you will definitely want to make a reservation ahead of time. La Parada’s foods and dishes are all inspired by Peruvian culture with a Mexican twist.. During the summer months you can dine out on the patio, and during the cooler months head inside to dine near the fireplace indoors.
There is a beautiful and tranquil park located just outside of the city. The park is called Parque Benito Juarez. This is the perfect park where you can exercise, relax, eat Mexican ice cream (also known as helado), or just go on an afternoon or evening stroll.
