You probably already know that Mexico is an incredible country with diverse landscapes, welcoming people, and rich culture. However, did you also know that Mexico is also home to some of the world’s natural wonders? There have been various lists compiled over the years referring to the world’s most spectacular natural wonders and human-built structures. The original list was found in the book “The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World” which was based on guidebooks popular among Hellenic sightseers. That book only included wonders located in Mesopotamia and around the Mediterranean rim. Over time, various lists have been published that take into consideration wonders found throughout the world, too. Keep reading below to learn more about Mexico’s wonders of the world. Maybe it’s time you plan a vacation to Mexico to treat yourself to some much-needed rest, relaxation, and fun in the sun, too!

Paricutin in Michoacán

To start with, Parícutin is a cinder cone volcano located in the Mexican state of Michoacán. Paricutin is situated near the city of Uruapan, Paricutin is about 322 kilometers west of Mexico City. In 1943, the volcano suddenly surged in a cornfield of local farmer Dionisio Pulido. As a result, the unforeseen eruption attracted the attention of the media and scientific outlets, too. The volcano has been quiet for a while and its last eruption occurred back in 1952. While some travelers may not be familiar with Paricutin due to its location in Michoacán, the cinder cone volcano was named one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. It even beat out much more well-known volcanoes including Yellowstone. Paricutin was selected as one of the world’s most important natural wonders because mankind witnessed its birth. The volcano is also fast-growing and reached three-fourths of its size within the first year after its appearance.

Chichen Itzá in Yucatan

Next, another one of Mexico’s wonders of the world is the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itzá. Chichén Itzá is a large complex of Mayan ruins found on the country’s Yucatán Peninsula that is also a UNESCO world heritage site. In November 2006, USA Today magazine revealed a new list of “New Seven Wonders” chosen by six judges. As a result, the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza in the Yucatan Peninsula were included in this list. Chichen Itza is estimated to have been constructed around the year AD 600. Some of the most notable features of the ruins include a massive step pyramid known as El Castillo or the Temple of Kukulcan. El Castillo dominates the majestic city, which is believed to have been inhabited from 600 A.D. up until the 1200s. Ancient graphic stone carvings remain at the ruin’s ball court, Temple of the Warriors, and the Wall of the Skulls. If you plan to visit Chichen Itzá to explore the impressive ruins, don’t miss the nightly sound-and-light shows that perfectly illuminate the ancient buildings’ sophisticated geometric.

Copper Canyon Natural Park

In addition to Parícutin and Chichén Itzá, Mexico has other notable wonders worth mentioning. For example, Copper Canyon’s Natural Park is a group of six distinct canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental. Known as Barrancas del Cobre in Spanish, Copper Canyon is located in the southwestern part of the state of Chihuahua in the northwestern section of the country. The walls of the canyon are a mesmerizing copper/green color, which inspired the name Copper Canyon. There, more than 65,000 square kilometers of canyons were formed by six rivers that drain the western side of the Sierra Tarahumara which is part of the Sierra Madre Occidental. All six rivers found in Copper canyon merge into the Rio Fuerte and empty into the Gulf of California. Other notable wonders in Mexico include Sumidero Canyon in Chiapas, Cuatro Ciénegas in Coahuila, The Pinacate Desert in Sonora, and the migration of Monarch Butterflies each year to Michoacan.
